One-page, 7 7/8 x 10, ALS, J.R. DRAKE, Owego [NY}, October 2nd, 1846, to Ephraim Leach of Utica, referring to the rights of Mrs. Tinkham’s children regarding the MYLES STANDISH inheritance. In 1846, there was an effort by American descendants of Standish to form an association to try to make a claim for Standish’s property in England. Drake writes, “Your letter to Mrs. H. Tinkgam of the 20th came to hand this morning in her absence she being now in the City of New York – I take leave in her absence to say that in the matter attended to in your letter, she feels a lively interest so far as the rights of her children are concerned and I have good reason to believe that if she were present at the intended meeting of the descendants of Capt. Miles Standish that she would cordially cooperate in the adoption of any proper measures you might think proper to suggest and in such view you will be pleased to assure the descendants that she will at all times be willing and ready to perform whatever is right and proper for her to do in the matter…J.R. Drake” MILES STANDISH was an English military officer and colonist who was hired as a military adviser for Plymouth Colony in present-day Massachusetts by the Pilgrims. Standish accompanied the Pilgrims on the Mayflower and played a leading role in the administration and defense of Plymouth Colony from its foundation in 1620. On February 17, 1621, the Plymouth Colony militia elected him as its first commander and continue to re-elect him for the remainder of his life. A defining characteristic of Standish’s military leadership was his proclivity for preemptive action. He led at least two attacks against Native Americans. Standish led a botched expedition against French troops at Penobscot in 1635. By the 1640s, he relinquished his role as an active soldier and became a farmer in what is now Duxbury, MA, where he was one of the first settlers. According to WikiTree, Ephraim Leach came to Troupsburg, NY, from Eaton and lived with his aunt Hulda (Leach) Standish and uncle Daniel Standish. Hulda and Daniel were first cousins and had no children. They named Ephraim as their heir. Folds. Light toning. Very readable.
