There used to be a small camera store (long gone) not far from where I worked. I think it was opened around 1940, and the gentleman who owned it took used cameras in trade. He had a large showcase with all the used cameras in it, so it was like walking into an old time camera shop. Most of the camera equipment I will be listing came from this store and has been in my showcase for many years. This is a Paillard Bolex H16 Supreme with all Kern Pallard lens. It is an excellent condition. The serial number is 97951. So, it was manufactured in 1954. I wound it and it runs properly, although I have never film tested it. This uses 16mm film 100ft reels, which are still available from Kodak. All the serial numbers, including the Octameter viewfinder match. A lot of times either the side back or the viewfinder has been replaced so the numbers are different. The 3 lenses are all Kern Paillard and not replacement lens. The Kern Pallard lenses are as follows: f=16mm 2.8f=25mm 1.4f=75mm 2.8 The lenses are clear with no mold or haze that I can detect, as is the Octameter viewfinder. (See photos). The original owner opted for the upgrade to the premium 25mm 1.4 fast lens. It comes with the Flat Base Adapter from 1956 which attached to the underside of ’round’ base H-8 and H-16 cameras, this support allowed the camera to be mounted on a tripod or balanced on a flat surface. The base was made of polished aluminum and contoured to the bottom of the camera with open space provided for the winding handle. Felt or cloth lining inside the base protected the camera body from scratches. All bases were adjustable to accept either 1/4″ or 3/8″ thread tripod screws. The top position allows for critical focusing through a magnified groundglass screen.VIEWFINDER: Eye-level focuser allows for critical focusing through a groundglass screen. Parallax correcting Octameter gives an exact viewing field for lenses of 8 focal lengths: 16mm, 25mm, 35mm, 50mm, 63mm, 75mm, 100mm and 150mm.FILTER SLOT: Built-in slot holds a gelatin filter behind the taking lens and in front of the shutter.VARIABLE SPEED: 8, 16, 24, 32 and 64 frames per secondRELEASE BUTTON: provides for the making of continuous exposures by a finger-tip release on the front of the camera. A side release allows for locked, hands-free running or single frame exposures.SHUTTER: 144 degree aperture shutterFOOTAGE COUNTER: adds and subtracts accurately in forward or reverse motion and automatically returns to zero when film is reloaded into the camera.AUDIBLE FOOTAGE INDICATOR: A distinct click announces the passing of each 10 inches of film through the gate. This mechanism may be disengaged, if desired, by simply moving a lever.FRAME COUNTER: Twin dial counts frames individually and in total; Adds frames in forward motion and subtracts when film is wound backwards. Dial may be reset manually at any time.SINGLE FRAME: Time lapse and animation is possible by using the side release button or an accessory cable release and adapter; I-T lever allows for timed or instantaneous single exposures.MANUAL REWIND: Clutch disengages spring motor and permits forward movement and backwind without running down the spring; allows for dissolves and superimposition.TRIPOD SOCKET: 3/8″ thread Notes and Comments:The H-16 Supreme was the first Bolex camera to feature a built-in gelatin filter slot. The H-16 Supreme also featured a folding turret lever that allowed the lenses to be rotated without disturbing focus or diaphragm settings. In addition, the turret was modified with a three position click-stop (earlier turrets had only two locking positions).The bottom of the tripod base was modified with a small, angled slot. This slot was included on all H models manufactured after this date and provided for the secure attachment of the Surefire Grip. Earlier cameras could be modified to include this slot, for a small fee, by a Bolex service facility.In 1954, this was marketed as the “H16 Supreme”. It was sold in the United States until approximately 1958.
